Artist's Description
Wild mute swans are a lovely sight to see anywhere, but put them on an icy pons in a salt marsh and they are impressive. Mute swans are named because they are less vocal than other species of swans, but they do vocalize. They are completely white with orange bills surrounded by black - easy to identify.
These swans are an introduced species in North America; they are native to Eurpoe and Asia. On average the Mute Swans are the second largest waterfowl in the USA, the largest being the Trumpeter Swan.
When these birds nest, they build high piles of vegetation in wetlands. The mounds are obvious and both parents, who mate for life, share in bring up the cygnets (babies). Do not get too close to a swan family! If they get the impression you are a threat they won't hesitate to attack in defense of their nest or their young.

About Carol Senske
I always wanted to try photography, and my retirement offered an opportunity to do just that. The natural world is my first love. Here you will find pictures of things both large (landscapes, for instance) and small (macro) that catch my eye. I hope the images serve as a window into the natural world many of you don't have the chance to see. In a sense, I'm trying to create a guided nature trail, sharing what information I have about the subject. I'm always grateful for new and better information and welcome all input. Learning is food for the mind and soul. Nothing is ever harmed in the picture-taking process, but some things that wander into our home (like spiders) are carefully removed from the house after they serve as "models"....

I've painted the silver and the black but never the white mutes we have here. We also have a very strange black and white... black neck and head with white body..This is as pretty as it gets Carol...
Carol Senske replied:
Your swans are splendid! I love them:>) Surely the ones with black head and neck and white body are a hybrid of some sort? Thank you for your unwavering kindness and support, Sharon - glad you like the swans - and many thanks for the V/F:>)
