Awesome image! This is so wonderful and I love the way you incorporated the little animals and birds and the little village in the distance too! Marvelous image!

I love it!! I was 4 when my parents wound up their building business in town an bought a farm in the country 500miles north of where I was born. We started with just one horse called Rangi (stubborn as a mule she was)at first then got others fortunately that made riding a whole lot more pleasurable. I remember tho, scraped knees getting bucked off with an older sister on the roadside after a cattle truck drove past, 3 weeks on crutches from a sprained ankle another incident, bitten on the ribs then later on in recent yrs bitten on the arm by a gelding that threw me, then later on put my daughter in hospital on drip for 3 days (we got rid of him). I've been stood on too but thankfully no bones crushed but have lost count of the concussions probably cuz that's what it does to one's memory over time. Wouldn't change a thing tho apart from seeing my daughter thrown in the air and then waiting anxiously in hospital for her kidney scans to come thru as all clear. Hasn't put her or me off riding either which is the best thing, just goes to show how addictive the elation and joy of the adrenaline rush is when galloping full speed or even the relaxed enjoyment of ambling along, breathing in fresh air without a care in the world too.

Artist's Description

"As if it were yesterday, I feel my father hand me up to my 14-year-old brother Thor, who held me in front of him in the saddle. Out of the corral at the edge of town our bay cowpony Rever'n' clopped, and within minutes we had left the small Wyoming town behind in its river valley. When we'd climbed to the sagebrush steppe above, Thor asked if I wanted to go fast, and of course I did! Away we went at an easy Quarter Horse lope, raced a jackrabbit that sprang from the brush, and flew along with some twittering horned larks. When we slowed to a walk again, I breathed deep the sage-scented air and watched some golden eagles drift lazily in the summer thermals. Because I was only 3 and my legs were short, I felt like I was doing the splits the whole time. I didn't mention my discomfort for as long as I could stand it, because I didn't want this glorious experience to end. Finally I told Thor that my legs hurt, and he said, "Maybe sitting sidesaddle would help." He adjusted me to t...

About Dawn Senior-Trask

Dawn Senior-Trask

I have been an artist since I was knee high to a short-horned locust. My dad, Willoughby Senior (FAA) was a professional artist and writer and I have stepped in his shoes since I was born, though he drew horses better than I did when I was a kid. My family lived in a hand-hewn log cabin we built ourselves in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and had no water or electricity. I love my life with my husband and family in Wyoming among the horses, gophers, deer, antelope, coyotes, red-tailed hawks, and the wild landscape. My work is driven by the land, animals, wild plants and birds I have come to know so well. Hummingbirds still try to get nectar from my upturned fingers. My artwork consists of all these things and more...
