The Nantucket lightship that is now berthed in Boston's Harbor was built in 1936 and is the largest manned light ship ever built. She was anchored 100 miles out at sea making this the most isolated manned light ship in the world. she protected thousands of ships crossing the Atlantic from the treacherous Nantucket Shoals. She was decommissioned in 1970 and languished in various ports until Robert Marrino Jr.purchased her for $1! It is now on the National Historic Landmark Register and is operating as a museum.Support our National Treasures!
