I think it was the quiet, the stillness, and the low light. The many other highly decorated churches of much later dates often were highly prized stops on the many tours. Maybe Fossanova also falls into that category, but when we visited the gothic ones they were usually sparely populated. There was not enough gold leaf to attract. If one were going to set out in search of the soul then this would be the kind of place to aid in the travel.
