Description
Nerve bundles. Light micrograph of a section through bundles (large circles), or fascicles, of myelinated nerve fibres from the peripheral nervous system. Myelin sheaths (small black circles) can be seen surrounding the axons (grey). Myelin is an insulating fatty layer that increases the speed at which nerve impulses travel. The bundles are surrounded by perineurium connective tissue. Between the bundles is more connective tissue and blood vessels. Magnification: x13 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
