"Mission Maid" was a veteran B-17G with the 8th Air Force's 457th Bomb Group, based at Glatton in the parish of Conington. Ship 021 arrived in the UK in December 1943, and on New Year's Day 1945 completed her 75th mission. She was one of the few camouflaged Forts to remain with the group into 1945.
Credited with 8 German fighters destroyed, this veteran was eventually declared "war weary" and finished her tour of duty with the Air-Sea Rescue service. Returning to the USA in late 1945, she along with many of her fellow bombers fell to the scrapper's torch at Kingman, Arizona.

Another comment on this outstanding painting. I have seen this original oil at the American Society of Aviation Artists international exhibition at the 8th Air Force Museum, and this is one of those paintings that you really should see in person to understand the "wow" effect this art has. The awards are tonight, and I am expecting this to get a top award.
