Description
Nicholas Culpeper. Historical portrait of the English physician, herbalist and astrologer Nicholas Culpeper (1616-54). The twelve zodiacal signs surround his portrait. In 1649 Culpeper made a popular, unauthorised translation of the College of Physicians' Pharmacopoeia from Latin to English. In 1652 Culpeper published The English Physician. This was enlarged in 1653 to include herbal medicines and became very popular, being known as Culpeper's Herbal or The Family Herbal. The Red Lion House (lower frame), Spitalfields, London, England, was where Culpeper lived and worked. From the frontispiece to Thomas Kelly's 1850 edition of Culpeper's The Complete Herbal.
