Description
I grew up viewing the summer night sky though a telescope while on our family vacations. I'm not certain of what I've captured here but I'm pretty sure this is The Little Dipper, and I believe I'm seeing Ursa Major. If you can identify anything else in this photograph that would be greatly appreciated.

Heidi, regarding the star to the left of Polaris (the North Star), i believe that would Kochab- the end star in the upside down Little Dipper's bowl. Hard to tell give the constellation is off the top edge of the photo.

Thank you, Guy. Next time I'm in a place with a dark sky, I'll certainly try this again. :)

Beautiful work, no matter what! If it were the Big Dipper, the star at upper right -- five dipper-cup lengths in-line from the cup's right-hand star -- would be the North Star. v/f/tweet
Heidi Smith replied:
Thank you very much, Kip! It was a great night to see the sky. Living in a big city, I don't see much of the night sky.

Guy is correct The constellation is Ursa Major (The Great Bear). The part that we see is the Big Dipper. I remember doing a lot of sky watching when I was young. We had real country darkness. So I would spend a lot of time outdoors with my telescope. Mostly I would look at the moon, but once I found Saturn. I like your photography. It brings up a lot of good memories.
Heidi Smith replied:
So this is the Big Dipper rather than the Little Dipper? Thank you so much for you sweet compliment. That is probably one of the nicest things anyone could say... I'm so glad that my images bring up good memories. :)

I may be wrong, but I think that is Ursa Major. If you follow the up to the upper right corner, that should be the north star...the end. Star in the handle of the Little Dipper. Somebody slap me if I'm wrong. Nice shot at any rate.
Heidi Smith replied:
Thank you so much, Guy! I didn't even think about that being the North Star. I wonder what the bright spot is over to the left of it. I'll do a little research or maybe someone who knows can chime in. :)
