Description
"Nordic Winter Seascape, Aurora Over Håja, Kvaløya, Troms County, Norway"
"Håja" is a small island and prominent geographic landmark of the western coast of Kvaløya, outside of Tromsø.
Håja was home to a fishing village throughout the Medieval period, with documents showing that many locals lived and worked from the island throughout the 1500's. However, as with many small coastal villages and settlements of Norway, the population declined and the island was officially abandoned in the first half of the 20th Century.
More recently, in 1965, the unique shape of the island served as the inspiration for the architectural design of the "Arctic Cathedral" ("Ishavskatedralen"); one of Tromsø's most iconic cultural landmarks.
