Description
"Northern Shovelers" by Debbie Oppermann. I was quite thrilled to spot a few pairs of Northern Shovelers on the partially icy roadside pond in spring in Guelph Ontario Canada. I had never seen this type of dabbling duck before. They were in among the Mallards and the female Shovelers are almost identical to the female Mallards. The Spoony's use their large spoon shaped bill with their head down to forage along the water for food in shallow wetlands. The males have dark green iridescent heads, white chest and rusty sides while the females are a drab brown. They are also called just Shovelers, Spoonbills or Spoonys.
