Artist's Description
I continue to explore my inside life, my purpose, and what's truly important to me. Are artists the hearts and souls of our humanity? Are we the investigators of our society? Do I paint to tap into that often fleeting meaning of existence? I can't connect to the reason this was painted, it held no answers except how wonderful and whole I felt after it's completion!
About Stephanie Cohen
My artistic work is as an expressive self-portrait painter. Even though my subjects look nothing like me, my work is a form of documentation and journal painting, a study of human behavior. Originally from Brooklyn, New York, I majored in Fine Arts at Brooklyn College, and eventually found myself living and working in Los Angeles. My fascination with faces grew out of an intense desire for expressing myself. I was raised in the 1950s and 1960s when women and children were expected to keep their opinions to themselves. So my mother became my study. Her expressions often shifted, and it seemed that anything could make her face and mood change. So I watched her and all of her moods. Thus my art became my secret communication, with no words...
