Description
An artist friend of mine wanted to see a demonstration on the painting of skies... Thankfully, there is weather everyday so we simply went to the front yard overlooking Singleton Lake. A cold front had gone through the previous evening so a cold, unstable air mass full of streets of turbulent stratocumulus, filled the sky and the western horizon. The cloud streets were a bit disorganized as the unstable planetary boundary layer (PBL) was not that deep. The lines of stratocumulus snaked across the terrain and were enhanced by upslope and died in the downslope. The visible satellite image from that exact time showed the stable gravity waves perpendicular to the northwesterly winds at the top of the PBL as forced by the geography of the Appalachians. The atmosphere is never simple but it is a beautiful thing in its interrelated and very explainable complexity.
The fall colours were at their peak.
