Ohio City became a municipality on March 3, 1836. The municipality was annexed by Cleveland on June 5, 1854. President James A. Garfield frequently preached at Franklin Circle Christian Church in Ohio City. The focal point of Ohio City is the famous West Side Market. The market was built in 1912. The European-styled market draws an estimated one million visitors annually. A Christmas Story House is a museum in the Tremont neighborhood. The 19th-century Victorian was used in the exterior scenes of Ralphie Parker's house in the 1983 film A Christmas Story. Saint Ignatius High School is located in Ohio City. It has a reputation for academic excellence, as well as nationally recognized sports teams. St. John's Episcopal Church is the oldest consecrated building in Cuyahoga County. The church was one of the final stops on the Underground Railroad in Northeastern Ohio. The remains of an entrance to a tunnel can still be seen in the basement.
