Description
The fifth capitol building of Illinois, the Old State Capitol served as Illinois' statehouse from 1840-1876. The Greek Revival structure served as the backdrop for the presidential candidacy announcements of Abraham Lincoln (1858) and Barack Obama (2007). From 1876 to 1966 the Old State Capitol served as the Sangamon County Courthouse. Restored to it's former interior design, the Old State Capitol is a state historic site open to visitors.
The efforts of a young Springfield lawyer, Abraham Lincoln, and his legal colleagues resulted in the the move of Illinois' state capital from Vandalia to Springfield in 1837. Construction on the Old State Capitol ran from 1837 to 1840.
The state's first capital, Kaskaskia, was virtually erased from the map when the Mississippi River shifted course during excessive flooding in 1881.
