Deep in the San Juan Range of Southwestern Colorado, a narrow gauge locomotive eases across a shaking trestle. This painting depicts a Rio Grande Southern locomotive on the high line as it might have looked some 80 years ago. You won't find any photographs taken from this point of view, as I placed the paintings point of view roughly even with the deck of the bridge and suspended in space over the rocky gorge.

I am an American artist who specializes in transportation subjects. I am retired after a 34 year career in the freight railroad industry, so I am familiar with my favorite subject matter. My objective is to capture the essence of a scene or a machine, but without distracting detail. In many of the paintings, I have worked to create a sense of motion. The paintings are created using traditional drawing and painting techniques, and a variety of high quality oil paints, brushes and other tools, including the painting knife. My process is as follows: I begin by making several pencil sketches from different angles and distances.
