Description
A llama (L, Lama glama) and an alpaca (Vicugna pacos, centre) pose for the camera in Bolivia's Sajama National Park. They are South America's 2 domestic camelids and closely related to camels. They are common throughout the Andes and in high altitude regions where agriculture is difficult are often the mainstay of the rural economy, herds can be huge. Note the difference in head and ear shape between the 2, llamas are generally larger (more so than in this image) and more camel-like. The peak is the beautiful Parinacota volcano (6342m / 20,805ft) on the Bolivia / Chile border, said to be the highest symmetrical volcanic cone in the world.
