Solar retinopathy. Ophthalmoscope view of the damaged retina of a patient caused by overexposure to the suns ultraviolet (UV) light (solar retinopathy). The retina is dark and discoloured. The optic disc, where the eye's nerves and blood vessels emerge is yellow at left. At right (red) is the macula, the eye's most light sensitive region. Red blood vessels are seen branching throughout the eye. Looking directly at the sun (for example, during a solar eclipse) can cause such damage to the whole retina. The UV light burns and damages the retina's light sensitive cells. This can lead to reduced vision or blindness.
