Description
Oral thrush in an AIDS baby. The white coating on the tongue is indicative of infection by the fungus Candida albicans. AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) is a contagious disease caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It causes a progressive weakening of the immune system, allowing opportunistic infections to take hold, and making normally harmless infections life threatening. It can be passed from a mother to her unborn baby through the placenta. Such babies are born with a weak immune system, and usually die within a few years. This baby is from Africa, where lack of access to drugs and information makes AIDS a major public health concern.
