Description
Our Lady of Vladimir - Prototype: Late 11th early 12th Century Byzantium. The Theotokos of Vladimir, or Our Lady of Vladimir, The Virgin of Vladimir or Vladmirkaya (Russian: Вдадймирская Ђоґоматерь).
The icon belongs to the iconographic type identified as Tenderness (Umilenie) or Eleusa. Patriarch Luke Chrysoberges of Constantinople sent the newly made icon as a gift to Grand Duke Yury Dogoruky of Kiev about 1131. Yurys son Andrej Bogoljubskij (the Pious) brought it to Vladimir in 1155. It is now at the Uspensky Cathedral in Moscow.
It prototypes Russian iconographic variants of the Tenderness, related with some miraculous of local worship. This icon is commemorated three times a year with processions of the icon or a copy: August 26 (Moscows deliverance from the siege of 1395), June 23 (final transfer to Moscow, and the bloodless victory over Tartars at the Ugra river, 1840), and May 21 (Moscows deliverance from the Khan Mahmet Ghirel in 1521).
As a work of art, it is widely regarded as the most important icon produced during the Comnenian period, expressing deeper humanity and emotionality than that typical of previous Byzantine art. It is described as exhibiting universal feelings of motherly love and anxiety for her child. This icon, as a window to the divine, invites the beholder to meditate with the inner eye of the soul, to reach for the love it represents.
