I have fond memories of the freeze/thaw stages in Alaska; the ice sometimes becomes thin on the slow-moving creeks and overflow occurs. This painting was inspired by such an overflow situation on Chester Creek in Anchorage, Alaska. I have a distinct memory of when I painted this, it was a watercolor demonstration about 28 years ago.
