This is an outstanding piece of work. The aura of Powell River with its resident fishing boats is portrayed beautifully. The vessel “Shirley” is very thought provoking to me personally.

Artist's Description
The only lasting truth is change. God is change ~ Parable of the Sower, Octavia Butler. Oya is a Yoruba-based deity who is adorned with nine colors. She represents the chaos and turbulence in life, nature, and the universe. I completed this commissioned piece during the US recession of 2007 2009, which inspired me to depict her in a marketplace.
About Karmella Haynes
The future is now. So-called magic is all around us. I am inspired by surrealism, afro-futurism, and Yoruba/Santeria. I am also inspired by artistic abstractions of physics, biology, and chemistry that scientists like myself use to communicate things that are not immediately obvious to many people. Fiction is an unnecessary distraction. Seemingly mundane facets of our real world are actually amazing. My full-time job is an assistant professor of biomedical engineering and synthetic biology at Arizona State University. I have been painting since I was 11 years old.
