This image of the Marion Brooks Natural Area was captured on October 6, 2013. The Marion Brooks Natural Area is a 975 acre state natural area located in the Moshannon State Forest in Benezette Township, Elk County, Pennsylvania. It is part of and situated on the northwest perimeter of the 48,186 acre Quehanna Wild Area which comprises parts of Elk, Cameron and Clearfield counties. Marion Brooks Natural Area, formerly known as the Paige Run Natural Area, was renamed in 1975 in honor of Marion E. Brooks, an early clean water activist and environmentalist from Elk County. This natural area is most noted for its extensive stand of white birch or paper birch (Betula alba) and is the largest stand of white birch trees in Pennsylvania and in the northeastern United States. It is also part of the range of Pennsylvania’s elk herd which is most concentrated in the elk viewing areas in the nearby town of Benezette. Marion Brooks Natural Area can be accessed from the east from Karthaus, PA at the intersection of PA 879 and the Quehanna Highway (PA SR 2004) turn right onto the Quehanna Highway and travel 13.9 miles or from the east from Medix Run, PA at the intersection of PA 555 and the Quehanna Highway (PA SR 2004) turn left onto the Quehanna Highway at the Medix Hotel and travel 8.8 miles. Marion Brooks Natural Area will be on the north side of the road and is marked by a Marion E. Brooks commemorative monument in a small parking area.
