I watched this pelican for many minutes at Cedar Point in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi swimming back and forth, bobbing its head underwater frequently and coming up with a mouthful of fish. A common bird found throughout the southern coast of the United States. The Brown Pelicans have been hard hit many times since the 1960's. The use of pesticides such as DDT which caused eggshell thinning and reproductive failure was the first hit. Hurricaine Katrina and the B.P oil spill also had a huge impact on the population of this often tamable bird. As a resident and frequent beach dweller myself, I am noticing a strong come-back of the brown pelican, one of my favorite birds to watch as well as paint.
