Description
I captured this image of a handsome male spotted towhee while walking past some low trees along the south bank of the Arkansas River in southern Colorado.
The Spotted Towhee and its close relative, the Eastern Towhee, were once considered one species — the Rufous-sided Towhee — but were recognized as distinct species in 1995.
A towhee is any one of a number of species of birds in the genus Pipilo or Melozone within the family Passerellidae (which also includes American sparrows and juncos). Towhees typically have longer tails than other Passerellidae. Most species tend to avoid humans, so they are not well known.
Spotted Towhees eat mostly insects, seeds, berries plus acorns, and small fruits. Their diet varies with the seasons. They Eat many insects, especially in summer, including beetles, caterpillars, moths, true bugs, and many others, also spiders, snails, and millipedes.
