Roaring he swept back over the town. A hail of dark arrows leaped up and snapped and rattled on his scales and jewels, and their shafts fell back kindled by his breath burning and hissing into the lake. H234.30-.33
As we look North, J.R.R. Tolkien walks along a composite street of the fine buildings of Oxford. In imagination Smaug in the form of Northern Lights threatens the town. Bard stands with a drawn bow in the shadow of Pemberton College; the college where Tolkien worked while writing The Hobbit. Polaris, like an arrowhead, shines within an open coil, and the roadway shines like the Long-lake itself.

At darkness Draco appears. His wings are Ursa Minor. Hundreds or thousands of stars rise to him in the East as arrowheads, and fall in the West in pairs, as burning shafts. SN448
When the Northern Lights are favourable they may serve as an animated image of Smaug in a fiery sky here.
Within the figure of Smaug, jewels like stars, glitter. His scales can hardly be seen; gunmetal-blue in a matching sky or they are red, like an Aurora and the burning shafts are like paired stars in the streaming red glow.
