10 Tips for capturing the best dog images:
1. Winning attitude = winning photos.
Dogs sense energy. Be positive. Have fun. And also...
2. Have lots of patience!
Patience is indeed a virtue, especially when it comes to photographing dogs. It can be frustrating aren't getting Fido to sit and stay, but if he won't sit and stay, focus on what he DOES want to do. You'll get better pics!
3. Shoot lots of photos!
The more the merrier! A wonderful moment is here and then gone again. Be ready with your camera at all times and shoot lots and lots of photos. You'll be surprised when you are looking through your photos and you find some fun surprises you didn't even notice earlier!
4. Treats, toys, squeakers, steak, balloons.
If you are hoping to catch your dog's attention, you'll need to find out what your dog is interested in. Be creative. And have a few options ready. The old squeaker trick may work for a little while, but he'll catch on sooner or later! I once worked with a dog that cared for nothing other than balloons. I spent about a half hour trying to catch a look with no luck, but then I stumbled upon three half-way deflated balloons floating around in the park. Sylvio the English Bulldog was a supermodel after that!
5. Lighting is important!
My best advice for lighting is to experiment with lots of different locations and lighting situations to find out what works best for your pet. When the sun is barely peeping through the clouds, get your camera out and snap some photos! These are the best conditions you could ever dream of! Be careful with bright sunshine, especially around high noon, as it can create very harsh shadows. Try capturing your dog's silhouette and shoot into the sun. Dramatic and edgy!
6. What makes your pet unique?
Does he or she have a special talent? A treasured toy? A favorite place? This will give you some ideas for photos!
7. Get on your dog's level.
Rather than always pointing the camera down, try getting nose-to-nose and capture an image from your dogs perspective.
8. Sneak around!
Take pictures of your dog when he or she is unaware and be amazed by the sweet and funny moments you capture.
9. Eyes are often the key to the emotion of the photo.
Make sure eyes are in sharp focus.
10. Use fast shutter speeds to avoid motion blur.
Pets are fast! And if your camera has "burst mode", use it. This will take several pictures consecutively and give you a better chance of capturing that special moment!
