This was another chiesa where fortune smiled on the wedding couple but not on our entrance to the Basilica Sant' Aurea a Ostia Antica. We spent some waiting time along a wall under the gloom of the 15th century Castle of Julius II in Ostia Antica. There was an effort at Latin, but I think the natives were restless. If looking for a visual definition of the word ‘picturesque' this is the place, but the scene also brings to mind the word ‘picaresque’. This would be a great place for intrigue, villains, damsels in distress, and heroes to the rescue. I might toss in a understanding priest, a deceptive cardinal, and secret events late on a moonless night under the wide shuttered windows of one of the houses. We best have the bells of the Sant' Aurea a Ostia Antica toll at some appropriate times.
