Description
Pick's disease. Light micrograph of a section through the brain of a patient suffering from Pick's disease, or focal lobar atrophy. Numerous Pick's bodies (dark purple objects surrounded by white) are seen. Pick's bodies are a feature of the disease. They are formed by the accumulation of protein filaments in the nerve cells (neurones) of the brain, which severely impairs the cells' ability to process sensory information. Pick's disease is a degenerative condition that causes shrinking of the temporal and frontal lobes of the brain, accompanied by the death of the brain's neurones. Magnification unknown.
