PINE GROVE NEVADA

Situated 6,7000 feet high on the eastside of Smith Valley Range. Pine Grove was a scant 20 miles by stage from Mason Valley. Many of the citizens of Mason Valley had business houses in Pine Grove. William Wilson, who in 1871 bought the William Lee Mill in Masson Valley, is the same one who found gold high in the range in 1866, July 9. By 1867 over 300 people had moved into the Pinion pine studded area. In 1868 Pine Grove had three ore mills, the Central, five stamp mills, the Pioneer Mill, 10 stamp mills and the Wilson The principal mines were the Wilson and the Wheeler. The town was built in the main canyon with the mines on both sides of the canyon where the gold and some silver was found in the rock. Three miles southwest of Pine Grove and 800 feet higher gold was discovered and Rockland burst into existence in 1868. Two years later a 10 stamp mill was built.
