My longtime friend, Michael Gross joined me on a shoot out West some years back. We put the rental SUV through it paces running it up and down every dirt road that looked promising. At the summit of one mountain that looked above the Sequoia National Forest I spotted this tree and was captivated by the shape and texture. Using a 8x10 Wista Field View camera which used individual sheets of 8x10 film, I set up for this shot. The film was processed one sheet at a time, in the dark, in a tray of chemicals. It took a very long time to process the trips film sheets. This single sheet technique was used by two of my heroes, Ansel Adams and Ed Weston, with whose work I exhibited. This image was also licensed by Kodak who ran it in an international product brochure and was exhibited worldwide.

Scott Griswold, Jr. began his professional imaging career in 1976. He had been a music major in college but when his parents gave him a 35mm camera as a birthday gift, music took a back seat. Scott taught himself the Zone System of exposure made famous by Ansel Adams and Edward Weston. This system makes use of the constant fact that all light meters can only register one piece of information...middle gray...Zone 5. No matter what the light meter is pointed at, the applied settings always produce a neutral gray. But, know this constant is the basis for applying all other measurements.
