It is roughly 60 thousand light years in optical diameter (about ½ the Milky Way) and is 2.8 million light years from Earth (one of the farthest objects visible to the naked eye). I received my first telescope, a four inch Meade Newtonian reflector, as a Christmas gift from my wife in 1997. At that time, we lived in La Mesa, CA where the light pollution from the greater San Diego area made observing deep sky objects very difficult. In 2001, I bought my first serious telescope, an eight inch Meade LX200 SCT, which could later be used as a solid imaging platform. I also joined the San Diego Astronomy Association (SDAA) and my wife and I would drive the almost sixty miles to the SDAA’s Tierra Del Sol site every time I wanted to use the telescope. I purchased one of the first Meade DSI CCD cameras and was immediately hooked on astro-photography. I could finally see deep sky objects (i.e., galaxies, nebulae and star...
