Description
Pluff mud and salt marsh at low tide at Hunting Island State Park in the Low Country of South Carolina. Spartina grass and pine trees are typical vegetation of the Sea Islands in the Carolinas. The thick gluey mud of the tidal flats is known as pluff mud, occasionally spelt plough mud. Sea marsh and barrier islands are critical habitat for wildlife and to the ecology of the east coast of the United States.
