Artist's Description
Point Bonita Lighthouse located just north of San Francisco in the Marin Headlands. This photo shows the lower buildings at the lighthouse.
The original Point Bonita Lighthouse, a 56 ft. brick tower, was located too high. Unlike the East Coast of the United States, the West Coast has dense high fog, which leaves lower elevations clear. The original light was 306 ft. above sea level so the second order Fresnel lens was often cloaked in fog and could not be seen from the sea. In 1877, the lighthouse was moved to its current location at 124 ft. above sea level.
About SFPhotoStore
Tim Shetz: founder of SFPhotoStore Tim was given his first 'real' camera when he was 12. It was given to him by the best teacher he could have asked for…his father. Having studied engineering, architecture and design, Tim's images tend to show the detail of things and places. Tim has been a photographer for over 30 years. He has lived in the Bay Area for over 25 years and decided it was time to start sharing his view of the world. If you are interested in a black and white or sepia version of one of the color photos shown here, please send a...
