Description
The best gifts that one can give to oneself or others are those that you use every day.
This selection of Polish pottery – which contrary to interior design rules does not match anything else in the house – represents years worth of gift-giving, bit by bit, and each cup, each plate, the teapot itself, bring images of the giver, the circumstance of the giving, to the person using it.
Isn’t this the way things are supposed to be?
Too often in our society we worry about 1) everything matching and looking like it goes together and 2) making a show with whatever we give, as if to prove that we are financially brilliant and have the money to buy whatever we want. Both of these attitudes are a direct result of too much TV and movie watching – two areas that take up too much time in our life, and definitely affect the way we think too much.
After all, our home – where we use ordinary things every day – is a place where we should be comfortable and at ease, surrounded by items that give us pleasure (and when they’re paid for, and we’re not making installment payments on them, they definitely provide more pleasure) and remind us of the people we love.
Because that’s what matters the most – the people in our lives, and the gifts that they give, or that they give to us, are reminders of why they mean so much to us. This is so easily forgotten in a society that is too busy, too stressed, and too affected by the advertising we see on TV, in movies, and everywhere else in our lives, to truly take it in that it is, indeed, the simple things in life that matter.
Polish Pottery, the artwork, reminds us of this – a joyous celebration of unmatched, uncoordinated color inviting us to stop what we’re doing, put on the tea kettle, brew a pot of tea, and share it with someone.
