Ponte Sant'Angelo is a bridge in Rome, Italy, spanning the Tiber river. It was completed in 124 AD by the Roman Emperor Hadrian to connect the city center to his mausoleum, the Castel Sant'Angelo (later used by the popes as a fortress and castle, and now a museum). The bridge is faced with travertine marble, and is decorated with statues by Bernini and his students. The bridge has also been called Pons Aelius ( "Hadrian's bridge"), because the full name of the emperor was Publius Aelius Hadrianus, and Pons Sancti Petri ("bridge of Saint Peter"), because in times past, pilgrims used this bridge to reach St Peter's Basilica.
