Description
Given the diverse history of biblical and historical accounts of the three wise men, I approached this painting as a mixture of the stories and images that have been depicted over the generations. They have been described as wise men, priests, kings, or astrologers. Their place of origin has been a source of debate, although often believed they journeyed from the East. Their image throughout history has varied based on particular religious or artistic viewpoints. Given this divergence, I painted these iconic figures with a wide lens. For example, the center figure wears a Phrygian cap in honor of some of the earliest traditions while the others offer more modern depictions.
Just as their gifts have been viewed symbolically (gold as a symbol of kings, frankincense as a symbol of the spirit, and myrrh as a symbol of death) so too can the three wise men be seen as symbolic figures who leave what is known to pursue a higher cause, purpose, or something greater than themselves.
This 24x36 painting was created with acrylics, brush and a few touches with the pallet knife.
