Description

The powhiri is the welcome ceremony. It is like a ritual dance in which a representative of the hosts (pictured here) lets the guests know they will be welcomed in peace. The representative of the guests is expected to respond with similar gestures. The response of showing the tongue is the final acceptance and welcome to the guests. This ceremony is performed at the Te Puia Cultural Center in Rotorua, New Zealand.
