The Big Joe 1 (Atlas 10-D) mission launched this unmanned boilerplate Mercury capsule from Cape Canaveral on September 9, 1959 to test the Mercury spacecraft heat shield. It is now on display at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Chantilly, Virginia.
