Rail Road Ties. Many in Michigan do not remember when the king of transportation was the railroad. In 1881 the Marlette Depot would have been a welcome rest spot for the passengers and a key feed from all of the farmers in the area to get their products to market. Today the Marlette Historical Society has preserved a rail road treasure for future generations to see.

Artist's Description

Railroad Ties Marlette Michigan The first twentyfive miles of track for the Port Huron and Northwestern Railroad opened from Port Huron to Croswell, Michigan in 1879. Marlette citizens lured the railroad by raising $15,000 toward construction of the tracks. The line extended from Saginaw Junction in St. Clair County to Marlette in 1881, and the Marlette to Mayville line opened in the fall. The Flint and Pere Marquette railroad purchased the Port Huron and Northwestern in 1889. Flint contractor E.M.Stewart built the Marlette depot in 1890 with double waiting room. The Marlette Historical Society bought the building in 1999.
