Artist's Description
A painting of Rain in the Face, Hunkpapa Lakota. The work was inspired from an archive photo of the man in his prime. He was born on the fork of the Cheyenne River in 1835. He was imprisoned at Ft.Abraham Lincoln without cause by Cap.Thomas Custer on orders from his brother George A.Custer. He escaped and rejoined Sitting Bull at Powder River and went on to participate in the Battle of the Little Big Horn June 25,1876. He is thought to have killed Tom Custer in the face at close range. This remains a mystery inasmuch as he has both claimed it and denied it during his life. He is also reported to have cut out his heart but said if that was done it wasn't by him. Rain in the Face became famous and somewhat popular by the White public at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893 on exhibition. He died in of a lengthy illness in his home at Bullhead Station,Standing Rock Reservation, North Dakota in 1905.
