Artist's Description

Before the viaduct was completed in the mid-1930s, the Erie ran at grade through the center of Elimira, NY. This painting is based generally on a photograph taken by my grandfather from the Southwest corner of Water Street and Railroad avenue. As I made sketches for the painting, I removed from foreground clutter and changed the point of view. The relaxed posture of the crew indicates that they have made the trip a thousand times before. The painting was completed in early 2009.

I am an American artist who specializes in transportation subjects. I am retired after a 34 year career in the freight railroad industry, so I am familiar with my favorite subject matter. My objective is to capture the essence of a scene or a machine, but without distracting detail. In many of the paintings, I have worked to create a sense of motion. The paintings are created using traditional drawing and painting techniques, and a variety of high quality oil paints, brushes and other tools, including the painting knife. My process is as follows: I begin by making several pencil sketches from different angles and distances. Once I am confident I have a solid plan, I make a more detailed sketch with appropriate shading. Then,...
