This was painted looking across to Stenbury down on the Isle of Wight near Wroxall. The sky suddenly darkened dramatically and everything was bathed in a purple grey light. I like the way the downland became a single dark mass against the lowering sky. The sense of power from the storm gave the the scene a lot of energy and i also wanted to reflect the subtle shades of luminous greys in the sky.

I'm a landscape painter from the Isle of Wight, a small island off the south coast of England. The subject of all my paintings is simply the distance. The feeling of space when we stand in front of a landscape and look into the distance. The effect of the colours, tones and lines. I want to find the moment when we suddenly see something unfamiliar, something infinite. I paint in oils on small wooden panels. I like the way the smooth surface of the wood makes the paint drag and blend in unexpected ways. The colours also stand out more because the paint isn't absorbed so much as on canvas. I like to use just primary colours, 3 blues, 2 yellows, 2 reds and white. By blending everything only from the primaries it creates lots of subtle...
