Description
The common Raven, here found sitting on the railing in Telegraph Cove on Vancouver Island, also - Corvus corax, is a common bird in all of the northern hemisphere. It is the largest songbird, up to 60 cm in length and up to a 130 cm wingspan. It is entirely glossy black with long wings, a long wedge shaped tail, and a large bill. It is usually found in coniferous/mixed forested areas, agricultural and coastal areas.
The raven is an omnivore who feeds on anything that is available. It often scavenges on large carcasses and road kill, but it also kills rodents, robs nests, and feed on insects. This highly intelligent bird often follows predators to take advantage of an easy meal. It carries and hides food for future needs.
