The Ravine Gardens, a large kidney-shaped ravine, with a spring fed stream running through the basin, were a Depression-era project, and the stonework, fountains, coquina-rock obelisk, and scenic drive through the ravine are in fine shape.

The major characteristic of this unusual park is the huge natural depression arranged in two long fingers that run west to east, created eons ago. As time passed, the slopes of the ravine were colonized by grasses, shrubs and trees. For those who like palms, queen palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana) has more or less gone wild and the ravine has the tallest pindo palms (Butia capitata) I've seen. There are also plenty of other big trees, notably southern magnolia and sugarberry in the ravine, one of the steepest places in the Florida peninsula.

Ravines are hard to find in flat Florida, so if you go to Florida you don't expect to see the "Grand Canyon", but Ravine gardens gives you the feeling that this place is differen...
