Congrats on composing this photo to get both the Ajax and Hercules into the photo. I am very familiar with this location as I was stationed there in 1968-69. Went back years later and they didn't have the Hercules out front the time as they were working on it. I saw a photo on the website of Sandy Hook and then realized what you did to compose it...well done. Didn't ya just wish you had a spray can of white paint to cover the peeling paint on the Ajax!! Again, well done and thank you.

As a vet of the Nike Hercules era, I was looking for a photo of a Hercules Missile for a friend as a gift who happens to live in a desert, and this fit perfectly. Thank you for not putting the subject directly in the middle, I too am a photographer.

I did not receive the hand towel with this order.
This image was selected to be the poster image for the 2015 Bainbridge in Bloom Festival, Bainbridge Island, WA. The dark background sets off the curling tentacle that is reaching out from a hungry bloom, as is the lower leaf that balances all the flowers in the upper corner. So, I titled this painting "Reaching". The design is striking as my duvet cover!
In 2016 I was selected to be the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival poster artist!
For the past few years I've been painting flowers up so close that they envelop the viewer in their sensuality and rich color. Enlarged, they become almost abstractions from nature without seeing the outer shape or the environment around them.
In 2012 I qualified to be a signature member of the Northwest Watercolor Society (NWWS). This is earned by being juried into a select number of local chapter and international watercolor society shows sponsored by NWWS. The initials now follow my recent watercolor paintings.

Watercolor is my medium. I zoom in and compose from my photos to fill a picture plane with a compelling design that takes the viewer into an abstract and sensual world. I look for beautiful transitions of color or textures that could be expressed luminously with my many glazes of watercolor, or that might provide an opportunity for me to try new painting techniques. I paint the inner landscape of flowers calling these works Floralscapes. The shapes, designs and patterns inside flowers and plants are the subject that awakened my love of painting, giving me a chance to create images of stunning beauty while merging realism with an abstract sense of design. As my paintings get larger, and I face new technical challenges with watercolor,...

This is striking Sandy. As an amateur watercolor artist I can only be amazed at how you achieve such skill in your botanicals. Do you paint on black paper or is this many layers of dark? I am awestruck!
Sandy Haight replied:
Thanks Maggie! Since watercolor is transparent you can't really paint on black paper.. I mask out the flower first and build up the dark background with layers of complementary colors to achieve a rich dark background...thalo green + alizaron crimson, Ultramarine blue+ burnt umber. This combos can get really dark if you don't use much water. Make a big enough puddle to cover the area. It dries lighter so you may have to do several glazes. Have fun!
