Mixed Media - Acrylic, Tobacco, Bear Root, Copal, Lavender, Sweet Pine, Cedar, And Sage On Canvas
Birth experiences are so vastly diverse, taking place in all kinds of different settings, with various configurations of birth attendants & helpers. COVID has introduced a whole new environment, where it can be more common that the birthing person is not able to have loved ones present to support throughout the process. This piece is a two part piece — with an underlying piece that is painted over to create the final image. The underlying piece depicts a traumatic hospital birth that is cold, clinical, and colonized, & where the birthing person does not have a relative supporting. The birthing person is represented by the universe, protected in gold writing that reads: “you are sacred, you have the universe inside you, you are a source (of life), you are a vessel of ancient wisdom & teachings.” The rough black background represents the generations of womxn who have not been treated with these acknowledgements while bringing life into the world. This scene is painted over with a Phoenix & the infinite medicines the womxn is connected with. This depicts the spiritual aspects of the birth despite the physical circumstances: rebirth & reemergence through both the act of bringing life into this world, and through the traumatic colonized experience. Tobacco is offered to the roots that represent her deep connection to the earth, and a variety of medicines that were meant to be a part of her birthing experience line the bed she is lying on. She is always connected with these medicines, and they help her, support her, and ground her in the midst of her transformation. The womxn is a warrior, and this piece depicts one of her coup stories.
