ᑳᐆᐧᑎᓂᑫᐄᐣ ~ kâwôtinikêwin ~ reclamation. This piece is about reclaiming traditional birthing practices, beginning with the lodge, which forms a vortex with the cosmos. My Elder Maria McCoy (Anishinaabe from Turtle Mountain ND) taught me that the woman in the sky pours water from the Big Dipper to help baby transition into the physical world. Baby’s spirit descends from the Pleiades through the string of lives, and comes into their physical body through the umbilical cord and tree of life (placenta). Mother Earth is supporting the birthing mother from below, pulling baby’s physical body into this realm. This Blackfoot-style lodge has 4 tie poles, all anchored and rooted into the ground, with 4 iniiskims (buffalo stones) below that accompany the lodge. Baby is coming into the world at the break of dawn, a powerful time when Morningstar is visible. Baby’s ancestors are dancing in the sky in celebration, also supporting the birth and bringing an energy of love and excitement to labour and delivery.
