The Red-Tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) is a conspicuous and large hawk, with a length of about 19 inches and a weight of about 2.4 pounds. Their breeding range is throughout most of North America, including the entire United States. The Red-Tailed Hawk has 14 subspecies, showing lots of geographic variation in plumage colors. While the adults have the distinctive red tail, the juveniles have patterned tails with numerous dark bars. Their varied habitats include forest, desert, grasslands, farmlands, and urban areas. Most common prey includes small mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians, and fish. Red-Tailed Hawks typically hunt either from an elevated perch and swoop down on their prey, or while flying, pursuing and capturing prey on the ground or in the air.
