The Red-Tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) is a conspicuous and large hawk, with a length of about 19 inches and a weight of about 2.4 pounds. Their range includes the entire United States. They show lots of geographic variation in their feather colors. Most of their hunting of small mammals and snakes is either from a perch or while kiting. While the adults have the distinctive red tail, the juveniles do not.

This mature Red-Tailed Hawk taking a bath in a large puddle on a field, behavior I hadn't observed previously, was photographed at the Croton Point Park in Croton, New York, on 3-25-2015. I used a Nikon D800 camera body and a Nikon 300mm f/2.8 VR2 telephoto lens to capture this image.
