The Red-Tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) is a conspicuous and large hawk, with a length of about 19 inches and a weight of about 2.4 pounds. Their range includes the entire United States. Most of their hunting of small mammals and snakes is either from a perch or while kiting. While the adults have the distinctive red tail, the juveniles do not. The Red-Winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) is abundant and widespread throughout the United States. It is stocky, has rounded wings, short tail and a pointed thick bill. The adult male is primarily black with orange-red shoulder patches, measuring about 8.75 inches in length and 1.8 ounces in weight. Red-Winged Blackbirds and other small birds may go after, or "mob" hawks, owls, and larger birds, particularly in the spring as a means of protecting their territory, nests, and young chicks.
